The morning started off like any other for Cecilia Celis. She let her two Yorkshire Terriers, Lulu and Heidi, out into the backyard of her Las Vegas home to play. What she didn’t know was that danger was already waiting. Perched nearby was a massive red-tailed hawk, watching silently from above. The moment the dogs set paw on the grass, the hawk zeroed in on its target.
In a blur, the bird swooped down and sank its talons into Lulu, lifting her off the ground and gripping her tightly around the neck. Heidi barked and darted around in circles, helpless as she watched her sister being attacked. Cecilia looked out the window and was instantly overcome with panic. She ran outside screaming, doing everything she could to scare the hawk off. But the bird wouldn’t let go.
Desperate, she grabbed the closest thing she could find—a couch cushion—and rushed toward the bird. Swinging the cushion with all her strength, she struck at the hawk, over and over. It didn’t do much damage, but the sudden hits were just enough to startle the bird. Finally, it loosened its grip and dropped Lulu.
Shaking and scared, Lulu was rushed inside. She had a puncture wound on her neck, but was thankfully going to be okay. Cecilia still can’t believe how close she came to losing her dog right in her own backyard.
She also believes the hawk might be someone’s pet. Since the attack, it hasn’t left the neighborhood and still circles overhead from time to time. Now, the family keeps a close eye on Lulu and Heidi whenever they’re outside.
Cecilia knows how lucky they were that day. If she hadn’t acted quickly, the outcome could have been very different. And while Lulu is still recovering from the trauma, she’s home and safe, thanks to the love and determination of the person who refused to let her go without a fight.
