A dying veteran who had just been moved into hospice care wanted nothing more than to spend his last moments with his beloved dog.
According to a Facebook post by Albuquerque Animal Welfare, John Vincent, a 69-year-old Marine who served in Vietnam, was compelled to give up his 6-year-old Yorkshire Terrier mix named Patch when he was admitted to the Hospice Center at the Raymond G. Murphy Veteran Affairs Medical Center.
When Vincent became ill, he had no family to turn to in the Nex Mexico region to take care of his canine friend.
Vincent told Amy Neal, a palliative care social worker, his last wish, realizing he didn’t have much time left: he wanted to say goodbye to Patch.When Neal informed Albuquerque Animal Welfare—where Patch had been placed—of Vincent’s desire, they acted.
Vincent’s request was granted, Albuquerque Animal Welfare said in a touching Facebook post on Friday.According to the shelter, “Yesterday was a special day for a Veteran named John Vincent and his cherished dog Patch.”
Amy Neal, a social worker in palliative care, stated that John Vincent might not have much time left and that he only had one wish. Vincent wished to spend one final moment with his dog.
“We were able to arrange for their final reunion to take place yesterday.”In addition to the message, the shelter published many images showing Patch eagerly sharing one last hug with Vincent.
Vincent gripped him tightly from his hospital bed as the dog tenderly licked his injured owner.
Albuquerque Animal Welfare remarked, “It was such a touching event.” “They were overjoyed to meet one another and exchange farewells. Making this veteran’s last wish come true was an honor.
The city’s Animal Welfare Department’s chief of field operations, Adam Ricci, spoke more candidly to CNN about the reunion, saying, “It was an automatic ‘yes’ from us.”
Therefore, we collaborated with the VA to coordinate things, Ricci said CNN.
He told the newspaper that Patch and Vincent had the chance to be together all day.
According to Albuquerque Animal Welfare, Patch already has a “interested adopter” and is waiting to be adopted by a new family at their Westside Animal Shelter.
A request for comment from PEOPLE was not immediately answered by Albuquerque Animal Welfare.
