The pair in Platteville laid four eggs this season, a rare occurrence as bald eagles typically lay one to three eggs per season.
The female eagle laid her first egg of the year the morning of Feb. 22, The next eggs were laid on Feb. 25, Feb. 28 and March 4.
Three of the eggs have already hatched, with two of them hatching the morning of April 4 and the other hatching two days later on the morning of April 6. On Thursday, the fourth egg pipped and at around 5 p.m., the chick hatched.
According to RRP: The eagles’ nest “FSV-N0” is 9 feet by 8 feet wide, 8 feet high and 57 feet off the ground, . It has a perimeter of about 26 feet, a total area of about 56 feet, and probably weighs between 2,200 and 2,700 pounds. It is large enough to be seen on satellite! The nest is built primarily of cottonwood branches and lined with prairie grass.
As the eagles look out of their nest, they might view the Foothills, roughly 15 miles west of the nest, or the junction of the St. Vrain and South Platte rivers, roughly 2 miles north. The two eagles’ primary food sources include the river systems (fish and turtles) and a nearby prairie dog colony.
Last year, the pair had three eggs, and records show only two hatched. The eagles usually lay eggs between mid-February and early March. The eggs hatch in late March to early April and then the young fledge in June.
Last year, the bald eagles raised three eaglets – their first brood in years to make it this close to adulthood.
According to the park, bald eagles have nested on Standley Lake since 1993.
They are majestic birds. So excited that they are growing in numbers!
